As a grown woman of seven and twenty, I finally got around to reading a beloved children's classic: A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was absolutely wonderful! I have actually read Burnett's The Secret Garden a few times, but this was my first foray into Princess. I love the 1995 movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), as well as the 1986 British television version (which is less flashy, but certainly the more accurate of the two).I was a little worried the book would be too over-the-top fluffy and sugary
for me, but was delightfully surprised by its warmth and depth. It follows the riches-to-rags Cinderella story of little Sara Crewe, who is forced to become a servant in the girl's seminary where she was once the star pupil. Throughout her struggles and disappointments, Sara remains true to herself and loyal to her friends. She is able to find happiness where she can, and eventually is repaid in kind. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend the book A Little Princess, as well as the 1986 adaptation (which I found at D.I. for $4!). Or better yet, come over to my house and we can watch it together.

There is another version -- really old and cheesy, but cute and sentimental as well. Shirley Temple is the star. Way-y-y before your time...
