Bitter:Sweet - The Mating Game

This CD has been in my queue and on my radar for sometime, but I finally broke down last week and purchased a copy for myself. It's been repeating at my computer, in my car, and on my MP3 player non-stop ever since. The band, Bitter:Sweet, comprises of sultry lead singer Shana Halligan and DJ/instrumentalist Kiran Shahani. They categorize themselves as Pop/Electronica/Trip-Hop/Retro Swank, and the sound is nothing, if not unique. They use a combination of jazz and percussion inspired instruments, along with Shana's sexy vocals, which give the band a nightclub lounge effect. Think of Ocean's Eleven meets 007, and everything in-between. In fact, most of you have probably heard one of their songs at some point and not even realized it. They first attracted attention in 2007 when their song played in a Bebe commercial starring the lovely Mischa Barton (see below), and now they do the theme song to my new favorite chick show, Lipstick Jungle. Their first album, The Mating Game, has been critically hailed, and it's no surprise since I haven't ever heard anything like it. I am loving the CD from beginning to end, and am already thinking of purchasing their newest endeavor, Drama (even though I haven't heard any of it yet). Some of my favorite tracks from Mating Game include "Don't Forget to Breathe", "Dirty Laundry", and "Bittersweet Faith" (their most recognizable song). For a sampling of some of their work, check out their MySpace page by clicking here. Happy listening!

Suzanne-

Their CD is surprisingly clean - the song lyrics are actually quite poetic. There are a few romantic references, and I even caught a "badass" in one of the songs, but nothing worse than that. I'm glad you like them too!

I've heard their new single, "Trouble", and it's as good as their original album. I think I might have to go back to Amazon and get a copy of "Drama". Yay!
