For those of you who aren't certain if Anne Hathaway can join the ranks of the "Austen elite" (ie: Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Ehle, Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, etc.), I assure you she can!
Her phenomenal portrayal of Jane Austen in Becoming Jane was fresh, captivating, and surprisingly subtle. Who would have guessed that underneath those dark lashes, lies a hidden reserve of dramatic timing, that hadn't been tapped in her previous roles?
The movie itself is loosely based on a fragment of Jane Austen's life, where she meets and flirts with a young lawyer named Tom Lefroy (a very cute James McAvoy). The screenwriter then proceeds to take over the helm and insert their own opinion as to the details of their alleged romance, but the story does seem fairly plausible.
The costumes are lavish, the cinematography breathtaking, and of course, the romance is heavenly. It was also thrilling to see snippets and fragments from all of Jane Austen's novels (most prominently Pride & Prejudice), and to watch a superb cast flesh out the rest of the characters quite nicely. Loved, loved, loved this movie!

okay, I'm really glad you liked Anne Hathaway in the role, because I was a little worried I might not like it if it was too fluffy... whatever that means! I'm really excited to go see it now! Great review!

My mom and I saw this today . . . while I thought it started a little slowly, I thought it fleshed out the characters nicely . . . and I found myself really affected by Jane and Tom's relationship (of course, everything affects me with my pregnancy hormones!).
It was fabulous, and I look forward to seeing it again. To some extent, it reminded me of Miss Potter--you know, frustrated love, a woman who is strong and independent and able to support herself by the pen. Both were great movies!
