4th annual best dressed at the Golden Globes

The award for best dressed this year goes to Charlize Theron! The Golden Globe nominated actress turned heads in a soft blush Dior Haute Cotoure gown. I loved everything from her sparkly headband to her Mais Oui ankle strap heels. Her entire look was absolutely incredible! First runner-up goes to Golden Globe presenter Salma Hayek in gold and black Gucci. Salma totally rocked this metallic dress with her beautiful curves, soft curls, and chandelier earrings. This is the best that Salma Hayek has looked in a long time!
Second runner-up goes to British actress Kate Beckinsale. Kate looked incredible in a strapless Roberto Cavalli gown. Kate is consistently one of my favorites for awards shows, and while I love her sparkly bangles, I definitely think she should have worn different shoes.The Miss Congeniality Award goes to Golden Globe nominated actress Evan Rachel Wood. I loved the shimmery details on her midnight green Gucci Premiere mermaid dress. Not many people could pull off this look, but Evan Rachel Wood nails it! Who was your favorite red carpet diva?

Is there anything Emma Watson can't do? She's an actress, a college student, and a model (she is currently under contract with Lancôme and Burberry). I have a feeling that this girl may have the longest career of the original Harry Potter trio.At the New York Premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 wearing an edgy bronze colored corset dress by Bottega Veneta. I love that she took daring all the way by doing dramatic eyes and sleek hair.
Love it, like it, or hate it?At the London Premiere of HP 7.2, Emma dons a soft gray Oscar de la Renta gown. I love the full tulle skirt paired with a beaded bodice. The dress also works with a white Antonio Berardi jacket. Emma looks simply stunning for her last Harry Potter premiere.

But enough about my opinion.

Utah Shakespeare Festival 2011

It was exciting for my husband and I to come back to the Utah Shakespeare Festival for our third year in a row. It is becoming a tradition I look forward to every summer, and while we can't afford to see all of the productions, everything we do attend at the Festival is pretty incredible.

2011 marked the Festival's 50th year! To commemorate the occasion, several rare copies of Shakespeare works were loaned from the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. It was awesome to see a first edition Complete Works of Shakespeare - dated 1623, as well as first edition copies of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo & Juliet. A Midsummer Night's Dream
From the beautiful costumes (King Oberon's was a particular favorite), to the rich dialogue, and the hilarious slapstick antics, A Midsummer Night's Dream was hands-down my favorite play this year. Directed by festival founder Fred C. Adams, it was clear from the seamless production that he knew this play forwards and backwards. I love how the three separate stories come together: the mischievous fairies, the four young lovers, and the troupe of actors rehearsing a play. Kymberly Mellen as Titania and Betsy Mugavero as Hermia were particular favorites. If you only see one play this year, it should be Shakespeare's popular comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream. "Lord, what fools these mortals be!" Noises Off!
This was my first time seeing Noises Off!, the popular stage comedy written by Michael Frayn. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going in, especially because the synopsis was pretty vague. Needless to say, it was one of the most hilarious and well-executed plays I have ever seen! Noises Off! tells the story of a play within a play. Act I is the play being rehearsed on stage, with the actors stumbling through their parts. During Act II the set is flipped around and we get a behind-the-scenes view of what is happening to the actors between takes. Love affairs gone awry, alcoholic actors, and missing contact lenses are just a few of the humorous things you can expect to happen. By Act III the set is turned back around again and everything has completely deteriorated - both on and off the stage. If you love not just funny, but laugh-your-head-off comedy, you must see Noises Off!
Romeo & Juliet
Romeo & Juliet is probably my all-time favorite Shakespeare tragedy, so I was very excited to see the Festival's production this year. I love the story of star crossed lovers, who, through a series of unfortunate circumstances meet an untimely end. But Romeo & Juliet is not merely a beautifully written tragedy, but a moral lesson on the power of love and hate. It was fun to see the play performed in the Adam's Theater (an outdoor theater similar to "The Globe"), with all of the characters dressed in Elizabethan costumes. Some of the standout performances were Magan Wiles (who was an exceptional Juliet), and Matt Mueller who practically stole the show as the fiery Mercutio. Romeo & Juliet was wonderful Shakespeare drama from beginning to end. "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!"

If you have the opportunity to attend the Festival this year, I hope you will. However, next year's lineup promises to be just as good. With productions of Hamlet, Titus Andronicus, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Scapin, Mary Stuart, Stones In His Pocket, The Drowsy Chaperone, and To Kill a Mockingbird, 2012 may just be the best year yet. 1st annual best dressed at the MTV Movie Awards

The award for best dressed goes to nominee Emma Watson. Emma has become one of my favorites to watch during red carpet events because she consistently takes risks and consistently looks awesome. Tonight she rocked this white silk Marchesa mini with silver Brian Atwood heels. Perfection!First runner-up belongs to newcomer Hailee Steinfeld in a black Louis Vuitton pantsuit. I thought she looked relaxed and beautiful, and I loved everything from her hair, to her colorful Ellie Patrick clutch, to her sexy peep-toe shoes. Well done Hailee!Second runner-up goes to Twilight actress Kristen Stewart. This is the best Kristen has ever looked at an event! She is rocking a red, safety-pin covered Balmain mini-dress. My biggest frustration with Stewart is that she always appears so uncomfortable and self-conscious at these award shows. If someone would tell her to stand up straight and smile more often, she might have gotten my pick for best dressed.The Miss Congeniality Award goes to nominee and comedienne Emma Stone. I thought she looked so fresh and fun in this Bottega Venetta multi-colored fringe dress. I especially liked the black bow tied at the waist, but I wasn't a huge fan of the matching orange purse and heels. However, the dress was darling, and I thought it matched Emma's personality perfectly.
Honorable Mention goes to presenter Mila Kunis. I liked that she did something a little different tonight by pairing a flashy Balmain miniskirt with a simple black Balmain top. I thought she looked young and hip, and it's definitely an outfit I could see someone wearing off the red carpet. I also liked her sleek hair and dark eye make-up. Mila was undeniably sexy from head to toe.

4th annual best dressed at the Oscars!

Our best dressed goes to Oscar host and fashion darling Anne Hathaway. I would like to give other ladies a chance to make my list, but Anne consistently out-glams and out-shines them all. I thought she pulled off this beautiful red Valentino nicely (especially the train!), and her hair, make-up and jewelry made the ensemble practically perfect.
First runner-up belongs to "best actress" Natalie Portman. The first time winner and mom-to-be looked beautiful in a plum colored Rodarte gown. I wasn't a huge fan of the shoes and earrings, but she was still lovely and graceful as she walked up the Oscar stage.
Second runner-up is Reese Witherspoon. All the men at my house agreed that she looked incredible in this simple black and white Armani Prive dress. I loved her sleek hair and bold emerald earrings. As someone who consistently nails the red carpet look, it was nice to see her back at the Academy Awards.The Miss Congeniality Award goes to Sandra Bullock. She was hilarious as she presented the best actor award - but I especially loved her in this gorgeous Vera Wang gown. Her hair wasn't my favorite, but otherwise I thought she looked great. Eat your heart out Mr. James!Honorable Mention belongs to Oscar presenter Halle Berry. Like Sandra, Halle has had a rough year, but I thought she looked amazing at the Oscars. From her Neil Lane diamond earrings, to her crystal encrusted Marchesa gown, to her glowing skin - Halle looked absolutely radiant! Plaza Inn

One of the fun things we did on our recent trip to Disneyland was a character breakfast in the park. Many of you might remember last year when we went to the Storytellers Cafe for the Chip n' Dale Critter Breakfast. Well this year we decided to have breakfast at the Victorian-style Plaza Inn with Minnie & Friends, and we were pleasantly surprised.The Plaza Inn is conveniently located inside Disneyland, just off of Main Street U.S.A. (right next to the entrance of Tomorrowland). Our breakfast started at 9:10 AM (just 10 minutes after the park opened) so we had a special entrance to ourselves, complete with Minnie Mouse "Breakfast in the Park" buttons and balloons!When we arrived at the Plaza Inn we were greeted by Brer Fox (a first for me) who is seldom seen in Disneyland. Throughout our buffet-style meal of pancakes, french toast, Mickey waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, muffins, pastries, made-to-order omelettes, fruit, juice, and cereal, we met several Disney characters. There was Brer Fox and Minnie Mouse of course, but we also met Captain Hook, the Fairy Godmother, Tigger, Eeyore, Dale (from Chip n' Dale), and Geppetto (also a first for me). Each of the characters spent a lot of time at our table, taking pictures and interacting with the kids.When we were done with breakfast, the rides were just a few steps away from the Plaza Inn. I really liked the Minnie & Friends Character Breakfast because the food was good, there were plenty of characters to meet, and it is conveniently located inside Disneyland. The Storyteller's Cafe is a little cheaper than the Plaza Inn and has a better quality breakfast buffet, but there aren't as many characters, and you have to drive out of your way to get there.Overall if I had to choose, I would probably dine at the Minnie & Friends breakfast again. It was a really fun experience for the adults as well as the kids, and definitely added to the magic of our trip. 3rd annual best dressed at the Grammy Awards

Best dressed belongs to American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez who totally rocked this Emilio Pucci long sleeved mini. I thought she looked fantastic - and I especially loved her matching Christian Louboutin heels. I'm not a huge fan of the hair extensions, but otherwise this woman looked absolutely amazing! The award for first runner-up goes to performer Jennifer Hudson. This is hands-down the best the singer has ever looked at an awards show! I love the color and design of her Versace dress, as well has her gorgeously sleeked hair. Second runner-up is for dancer Julianne Hough. I have seen her look terrible on the red carpet time and time again, but this time she seemed to get it right. I really liked her ruffled Malandrino gown with bold purple print. Honorable Mention goes to Glee star and Grammy presenter Matthew Morrison. He looked so effortlessly handsome in a black-lined gray jacket and skinny tie. I love that he did something other than a boring black suit on the red carpet. The Miss Congeniality award belongs to Glee star and fashion darling Lea Michele. I can't help it! Lea is consistently one of my favorites for red carpet events. She looks young and sassy in this black Emilio Pucci creation; a perfect choice for the Grammy's. But enough about my opinion...

This Duchess of Mine by Eloisa James
Let's be honest - Eloisa James is probably the best romance author writing today. Not only are her books wonderful (I love her entire Duchess series) but she also moonlights as a Shakespeare professor and romance book reviewer. I love this poignant story about a married couple who don't fall in love until much later in their relationship.

Beauty Like the Night by Liz CarlyleLiz Carlyle is my go-to author when I'm in the mood for something a little darker and richer. Like James, her books are also very well written, yet have an effortless feel to them. Beauty Like the Night tells the story of two lovers who are reunited many years later after fate has separated them. I love this modern day Romeo & Juliet story, but this time the couple gets a happy ending!

The Serpent Prince by Elizabeth HoytHoyt is a fairly new writer to the romance genre, but her books are wonderfully descriptive, romantic, and sensual. I stumbled across The Serpent Prince by chance, and was pleasantly surprised by the story and main characters. This is one of my favorite books to read curled up with a blanket on a rainy day. A chance encounter in the woods brings the two main characters together in this sweet romantic mystery.

Someone To Watch Over Me by Lisa Kleypas
Lisa Kleypas is probably the most mainstream romance author I read, and its no surprise why. Her books are simple and straightforward, yet there is always an undeniable chemistry between the men and women in her stories. I have loved all of her books about the Bow Street Runners, but Someone To Watch Over Me is the best; it combines romance, mystery, and even a little suspense. I think I've read this book five or six times. Love!

It's no secret that I love a good book, and I realized it's been a while since I posted a review on Cupcake Chowder! Part of the reason for this is because I post all of my book summaries on Goodreads.com. However, for all of my friends out there in blogger world who don't follow me on the Goodreads website, here are a few books I have enjoyed reading recently:

These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner I loved this story about a pioneer woman with spunk, grit, and determination, who carves a life for herself in the harsh Arizona Territories. Her relationship with a young cavalry officer is one of my favorite romances in recent memory. Definitely the best book I read in 2010!

Matched by Ally Condie I really liked this YA novel about a young girl named Cassia who is coming-of-age in a harsh dystopian society. Her story of intellectual awakening and first love is one that has been told before, but for some reason really resonated with me. A great read for teens and adults alike.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett Set in 1960's Mississippi, The Help follows the lives of three unique women, two of which are servants or "help" and the other is a young lady on the cusp of womanhood. I loved the themes of friendship, adversity, and personal triumph set against the backdrop of the civil rights era. I'm excited to see the movie version of The Help later this year!

2nd annual best dressed at the SAG Awards

This year the title of best dressed goes to SAG nominee Mila Kunis. She looked ravishing in this red Alexander McQueen Resort dress with a dramatic print. I also love that she added the belt (which seemed to be a trend on the red carpet). She looks sassy and chic from head to toe.
1st runner-up goes to Glee star Lea Michele (who was our winner for best dressed at last year's SAG Awards) in a beaded Oscar de la Renta. I love that she opted for something simple and stunning, especially after so many of her overblown awards dresses recently. Two thumbs up!
2nd runner-up goes to Black Swan star Natalie Portman, and her baby bump. I thought she looked ethereal in a white Azarra number, and I was very happy to see her take home the award for best actress! The Miss Congeniality award belongs to Mad Men star January Jones. I absolutely loved her daring yet modest black and gold Carolina Herrera gown. January consistently takes risks on the red carpet, and this time I thought she was spot-on. I love awards show season! Stay tuned for my picks for Grammy/Oscar fashion. But enough about my opinion...

The award for best dressed this year goes to sexy Mad Men star Christina Hendricks. From her beautiful wavy red locks, to her perfectly fitting red dress by Romona Keveza, she literally made my jaw drop.First runner-up goes to House star Olivia Wilde who looked dazzling from head to toe (literally) in this sparkly Marchesa gown. I love that her simple hair offsets the elaborate dress. (I also love the gorgeous Christian Louboutin gold shoes!)
Second runner-up belongs to Megan Fox who looked surprisingly subtle in a soft pink Armani Prive evening gown. I especially love the elaborate crystal detail on the bodice!And last but not least, our Miss Congeniality award goes to Catherine Zeta-Jones. Jade green was the popular color on the carpet, but she wore it the very best in this Monique Lhullier ball gown.
*One last note about some of the on-trend styles right now...Call me old fashioned, but I absolutely HATED all of the Linda Evans (think Dynasty) shoulder pad dresses (ie: Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Jane Fonda, and Scarlett Johansson to name a few). Just my two cents.

Downton Abbey premieres

It's hard to believe that 2010 is officially over! My husband and I were lucky enough to see a lot of really great films this year (despite low box office reports), so I had a tough time narrowing it down to a top 10 list. There are still a few movies I haven't seen: Blue Valentine, Waiting for Superman, and 127 Hours (to name a few), but I think I am just about ready for awards season. The King's Speech

The King's Speech is based on the true story of King George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George) or "Bertie" to close family members.
Bertie (portrayed by a brilliant Colin Firth, Pride & Prejudice, Bridget Jones's Diary) was the second son of King George V, and was never expected to reign. However, because his brother Edward abdicates the throne in order to marry American Wallis Simpson, Bertie reluctantly assumes the monarchy.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

A terrible stutterer since childhood, Bertie seeks the help of unorthodox speech therapist Lionel Logue (a sublime Geoffrey Rush, Elizabeth, Pirates of the Caribbean) to help him speak to his people. Radio is now the new form of media, and as Britain enters World War II, Bertie is determined to uplift, inspire, and address the nation (without his debilitating stutter).

Logue's unconventional methods and quirky personality can't help but win Bertie's trust and respect, and the two embark on an unlikely friendship. In fact it's quite clear that other than his wife, Logue may be the first true friend that Bertie has ever really had. Subsequently, the more Bertie is thrust into the limelight, the more he comes to depend on Lionel.

The King's Speech is rated R for one particular scene of strong profanity (about 45 seconds of the "F" bomb to be precise), but is otherwise free of drugs, violence and sexual content. Beautifully filmed on location in England, and set to music by Alexandre Desplat and Beethoven, The King's Speech is the best feel-good movie of the year. Don't be surprised to see Firth and Rush take home Oscars, and be sure to watch for great supporting roles from Helena Bonham Carter, Guy Pearce, Michael Gambon, Timothy Spall, Jennifer Ehle and Anthony Andrews. Happy viewing!

First off, I wanted to say that my sister Kiersten wrote a really great review of Black Swan on her blog The Wooden Bookshelf that you may like to read...One of the reasons I really wanted to see this film (besides all the amazing reviews) is that it's been rumored that Natalie Portman trained with a ballet company for over a year to prepare for her role as a troubled prima ballerina. I also love Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake, and knew it was an integral part of the story. That being said, I was absolutely RIVETED by this movie! From the costumes, to the choreography, the haunting music, and the stunning visual imagery of director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain), this movie had me on the edge of my seat from the beginning to its dramatic final conclusion.

Black Swan tells the story of Nina Sayers, a dancer auditioning for the role of a lifetime as the Swan Queen in the classic ballet Swan Lake. Nina has the technique and precision required for the part, but lacks the emotional passion needed to play the dual role of both the white and black swan. Although Nina is given the lead, the pressures of perfection, coupled with a psychotic mother, a task master director, and a rivalry with newcomer ballerina Lily (Mila Kunis, That 70's Show) drive her to an emotional and physical breaking point. The line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred as Nina descends into her dark new role, and subsequent sexual awakening.

I would like to warn my readers that this movie is not for the faint of heart. It definitely earns its R rating with drug use, gore, profanity, and strong sexual content. However, I hope that won't dissuade you from seeing one of the best movies (and best performances) of the year. There is already a Golden Globe nomination and Oscar buzz for Portman, and it's no surprise; it seems as if she was made to play this role. I hope you have the opportunity to see Black Swan on the big screen, so as to fully appreciate Aronofsky's brilliant cinematic vision. Happy viewing!

The Scarlet Pimpernel

A few weeks ago my husband and I went down to the Hale Theater in Orem to see one of our favorite stage musicals, The Scarlet Pimpernel. This is always one of their better productions, as evidence by the fact that they are sold out almost every night. I made sure to get our tickets back in February, which meant that we had FRONT ROW SEATS. If any of you have been to the Hale in Orem, you know it's not a large theater. Let me just say that watching a play from the front row is definitely an experience in itself. Within the first few minutes of the play I had three actors crash into my lap (I was on an aisle seat), spit on me (accidentally), and were close enough I could see the sweat on their faces (among other things). Of course I loved every second of it!

I have always been a fan of The Scarlet Pimpernel in most any form . I have read the book several times, and watched the film (starring Jane Seymour and Ian McKellan) more times than I can count. However, the thing that sets the stage play apart from both of these is the wonderful music. From the rousing Madam Guillotine, to the heartbreaking When I Look At You, the hilarious Creation of Man, and finally the stirring Into the Fire, The Scarlet Pimpernel has something for just about everyone.

My husband and I attended a Thursday night performance (which means we have actors that perform on T/Th/S) and we loved all of the characters. Marguerite was definitely our favorite actor and singing voice, with Chauvelin being a close second. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed in our Percy. I'm wondering if the M/W/F Percy was any better? I loved all of the costumes, especially all of Marguerite's beautiful clothes. It's obvious they put a lot of work into the details. I have been meaning to do this post for some time, and today I finally sat down to write it.

Occasionally, when I watch a movie, I tend to notice the setting or locations more than I watch the film itself. I especially love seeing homes in movies - I love to see the way other people live, or at least the way I imagine that they live. In fact some movie homes are places that will always stick with me. Here are a few of my favorites:

Tara from Gone With the WindTara wasn't just a beautiful house or a large plantation, for Scarlett O'Hara it was a state-of-mind. It represents everything that she worked so hard to reclaim throughout the movie, so it's no wonder that it is the last place she goes just before the film ends. Unfortunately, Tara was only a Hollywood film set, and not an actual house. Still, I love the look of it's stately marble columns and deep southern charm.

Green Gables from Anne of Green GablesThis home is as important to my childhood as it was for Anne when she first came to Green Gables. It represents a place to come home to, a place of friendship, of patchwork quilts and homemade bread, and a place where a young girl was encouraged to be exactly who she wanted to be. I can picture Marilla sitting in her rocking chair on the veranda; it's a warm summer night, and she's watching the horse-drawn buggies come clopping down the lane.

Cullen residence from TwilightTypically I am an old fashioned girl and I don't care for modern architecture. However, a house is really just some wood and nails until a family moves in, and one of my favorite fictional families is the Cullens. I love the large windows and big, spacious rooms. This house has a light, airy feeling, and not a place anyone would ever associate with vampires. Best of all is Edward's room, which is full of music and memorabilia that he has collected over the years. I would love to spend a couple of hours there.

Karen Blixen's home from Out of AfricaI love this movie, and I love this home. The best part is, is that this was the house they used to film the movie,and it was also the home of the real Karen Blixen (pen name Isak Dinesen) when she lived and loved and worked in Africa. This home represents the sweep and scope of the film as well as the lush wildlife and scenery of Kenya. Some of the best features of this house are the large stone facade, big bay windows, and gigantic wrap-around porch. Someday I hope I can stop in and see this place for myself.

The Owens Sister's house from Practical Magic
I have always loved the style and look of historical New England homes, and this one takes the cake. From the old fashioned windows, to the antique wallpaper, and the hand-carved wood furnishings, this house has it all. Every time I watch this movie I wish I could be an Owens woman and live with my sisters in this big, beautiful home! Once again, this was a house that was built specifically for the film, and when the movie was done it was torn down. Sad! I totally would have moved in...

Blakeney Manor from The Scarlet PimpernelAnd now for the finale! Of course I had to put an English home on my list, and after narrowing my choices considerably (Pemberley was a BIG contender), I decided to go with Milton Manor (aka the Blakeney residence from The Scarlet Pimpernel). I'm not sure I need to sell you on this home, because really, all you have to do is look at the picture and it's love at first sight. Someday I would love to travel back to England and do a tour of this house. Maybe Percy would invite me to stay for afternoon tea?

Emmy Fashion 2010

2nd annual best-dressed at the Emmy's

Our best-dressed winner also won an Emmy for "Lead Actress". Congratulations Claire Danes! She looked golden and gorgeous in her Armani Prive crystal gown (which needed no jewelry). Her skin and make-up were fresh and flawless...I thought she totally nailed it tonight!
First runner-up award belongs to Glee star Jayma Mays. I loved the striking navy color and seamless fit of her Burberry Prorsum strapless dress. The gold jewelry was a perfect accent, and I also liked the beautiful ruffles on the train (which gives the dress a nice, softening look). Perfection! Second runner-up goes to reality star Kim Kardashian. I was pleasantly surprised to see her looking so chic and elegant in white Marchesa. My favorite part of the dress was the Egyptian-style neckline and chiffon train. Beautiful! I know many of you will disagree with my on this one, but I'm going to go out on a limb and give Emmy presenter Anna Paquin the Miss Congeniality Award. Unfortunately, this Alexander McQueen dress does not photograph well, but it looked awesome on the red carpet and Emmy stage. I love that Paquin consistently takes risks, and I think this dress was a lot of fun (it's also fairly modest too).I had a really hard time choosing my Honorable Mention this year. In the end I decided to change my original vote of Jane Lynch and go with Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev. I thought she looked stunning and timeless in a lace Zuhair Murad dress.

Utah Shakespeare Festival 2010

This year my husband and I decided to make it a priority to return to the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. One of the biggest reasons, was that the Festival was doing a production of my favorite Shakespeare play, The Merchant of Venice. Of course we were not disappointed! Each show was exceptionally well done and featured fantastic actors, beautiful sets, and an array of powerful emotions. The Merchant of Venice
For 2010 the Shakespeare Festival nabbed veteran television and movie star Tony Amendola (from such films as The Mask of Zorro and Blow) to tackle the controversial character Shylock. The result was a tour de force performance that had everyone in the audience near tears.

One of the reasons I like Merchant so much is that it portrays every emotion and sentiment: love, anger, jealousy, friendship, revenge and mercy. From the strong female protagonist Portia, to the cunning and embittered Shylock, Merchant teaches us what it means to be a human being. A fantastic production that was my personal favorite! Pride and Prejudice
One of the greatest love stories ever told, Pride and Prejudice was a real treat to see performed on stage. This was my first time seeing a live theater production of Jane Austen's classic novel (I have read the book and seen the movies several times), and I was totally blown away. The set was functional yet beautiful, and the director staged scene changes with a fluid grace that kept the story and action flowing seamlessly. I especially loved the dialogue between Darcy and Elizabeth, however the best part of the production was actor Brian Vaughn's portrayal of the oily Mr. Collins. Much Ado About Nothing
Most people are familiar with this particular play because of the 1993 film starring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. And while the movie is fantastic, Much Ado is definitely a play that everyone needs to see performed on stage at least once.

I liked everything about this production, from the actors, to the costumes and sets, and especially the slapstick humor (the scenes in and around a large wine barrel are particularly funny). However the story rests heavily on the shoulders of the two quarreling lovers Beatrice and Benedick (played by Kymberly Mellen and David Ivers, respectively). Their mutual dislike and attraction were executed perfectly, and this is no more apparent than the powerful scene where their love is first revealed.

If you have the opportunity to attend the Shakespeare Festival, I hope you will. Some of the plays coming in 2011 are Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Noises Off!, and Dial M For Murder. However, the 2010 summer plays only have one week left, so hurry and buy your tickets today. Happy viewing!

New Moon vs New Moon

If you go to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), and type "New Moon" into the search engine, one of the first films that will appear is actually not the blockbuster Stephanie Meyer vampire flick The Twilight Saga: New Moon, but a much older film of the same name dating back to 1940 starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Now, unless you're a relative of mine, chances are you have never heard of these people. Allow me to enlighten you dear reader...

You see many years ago, when I just a young cupcake, my grandparents began what I like to think of as "the film education of granddaughter Meggie". I would spend a couple of weeks a year at their apartment in Utah (I was living in California at the time) and let my grandfather subject, or entertain me (depending on how you look at it) to all kinds of movies. I watched many black and white films, classics, Oscar winners, and even the occasional silent film!

My grandfather kept his VHS collection alphabetized in drawers, end tables, and closets (anywhere he could stuff them really) and had a hand-written list detailing where each film was stored. All I needed to do was refer to the sheet, make my selection, and relax on the couch for a few hours of cinematic bliss. Every now and then, my grandfather would offer up a film suggestion, and I would happily comply to his choice. Looking back now, I am amazed at all I learned from these movies, and the impact his "education" would have on me to this day (we still get together and socialize about movies).

Enter: Jeanette MacDonald.
When my grandfather was just a boy, he went to see MacDonald in a film, and immediately fell in love with the beautiful red-head. Since then, most everyone in the family knows her as "the other woman" in my grandpa's life.

MacDonald was an actress and singer in the 1930's and 40's who is credited with introducing opera into film. Grandpa would ply me with movies of the "Singing Sweethearts" Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, enumerating on his favorite songs and scenes, and the special meaning each one held for him. One of the many movies MacDonald and Eddy starred in together was titled New Moon. It's the story of hidden identities, forbidden love, and of course glorious operatic music. I have to admit, New Moon hasn't exactly withstood the test of time (a pretty weak plot and some corny scenes make it a delicious flop), however, the music and the chemistry between the stars are both very solid.

MacDonald's most successful movie would probably be the disaster flick San Francisco, in which she starred opposite screen heartthrob Clark Gable. However, if I were to suggest my favorite Jeanette MacDonald film, it would probably Naughty Marietta (voted most popular by the fans) or Rose Marie. (In fact, I love the song, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life [from Naughty Marietta] so much, that I had it sung by the world famous tenor Lawrence Vincent at my wedding reception). However, if you were to question my grandfather, he would likely choose the sentimentally bittersweet gem Maytime (grandma likes Girl of the Golden West).

All of these movies take you directly back to the "Golden Age of Cinema" when stars were contract players for the big film studios like MGM and Fox, and Hollywood was still considered glamorous...

So, if you decide to watch New Moon this weekend, might I suggest a film that doesn't involve werewolves and teenagers, and instead begin your own film education with a glorious black and white Jeanette MacDonald classic? I'd be happy to loan you my copy!

Oscar fashion 2010

3rd annual best-dressed at the Oscars!

Our best-dressed winner belongs to the gorgeous Penelope Cruz. Penelope was on my best-dressed list last year, and never fails to disappoint. I love the rich burgundy color of her Donna Karan Cotoure, which really popped on the Oscar stage.
1st runner-up goes to one of my favorite actresses, Kate Winslet. Kate is usually on my best dressed lists as well. She always looks simple yet elegant, especially in this Yves St. Laurent number with matching silver clutch.
2nd runner-up is the fabulous Queen Latifah. She totally rocked this soft lilac Badgley Mischka gown with jewel encrusted straps. Seriously, when she walked out onto the Oscar stage my jaw dropped. Gorgeous!Cameron Diaz is our Miss Congeniality winner. Cameron has disappointed me so many times on the red carpet, but this year I was thrilled to see her finally get it right. I love her total look - from her hair to her champagne beaded Oscar de la Renta.Honorable mention goes to first-time Oscar winner Sandra Bullock. I have to admit, I am not a fan of the hair and red lipstick, but this Marchesa dress is absolute gorgeous! It was her night, and I have to give her props for her beautiful Oscar fashion.Who was your favorite red carpet diva?

Storytellers Cafe

One of the things I was most looking forward to on our recent trip to Disneyland was the Chip 'n Dale Critter Breakfast at the Storytellers Cafe. Located inside Disney's Grand Californian Hotel (which is now on my bucket list of places I would like to stay), the Storytellers Cafe depicts American storytellers and tall tales in a lush woodland setting.The Chip 'n Dale characters are the cheapest of all the Disney breakfasts (probably because it does not feature the more popular Disney characters like Mickey), but the dining is superior as well. Everyone in our group chose the breakfast buffet, which featured an assortment of egg dishes (scrambled eggs, Eggs Benedict and made-to-order omelets), meats (pineapple glazed ham, sausage, bacon), breads (fresh muffins, croissants, pastries, Mickey waffles) as well as my personal favorite: caramelized french toast. We were also very pleased with the fruit selection which featured many out-of-season delicacies such as watermelon, mangoes, pineapple and strawberries. We paid around $20 per adult, and $12 per child (children under 3 are free), although prices vary during different seasons.Of course the kids weren't as excited about the food as the adults, because they were really there to see their favorite forest characters (which fit perfectly with the style of the restaurant and hotel). We met Meeko (Pocahontas), Koda and Kenai (Brother Bear), Terk (Tarzan) and of course Chip and Dale. Because we went early, the characters were able to spend a lot of time at our table to visit, sign autograph books, and take pictures. I definitely recommend Storytellers Cafe if you have small children that are interested in one-on-one time with the characters.Overall our experience at the restaurant and hotel were very positive. Everyone loved the food, characters, and free valet parking. At some point I would like to try some of the other character breakfasts, but I would definitely return to the Storytellers Cafe again. Like all Disney character breakfasts, the Chip 'n Dale Critters are reservation only, and must be made in advance by calling (714) 781-DINE. Happy eating!

My husband and I finally finished watching Season 3 of Mad Men, the highly-acclaimed and award winning AMC show about advertising in the 1960's. I love the visual style of Mad Men (there is nothing like it on TV), from the costumes, to the sets, and of course all the throwbacks to 1960's mentality where business was conducted over cocktails, women washed dishes in dresses and pearls, and men still got away with sexual harassment in the workplace. (Not that I'm condoning any of those things mind you, but as someone from a completely different generation, it is a rare and interesting glimpse into another world). From the intricate office maneuvering at Sterling Cooper, to the drama of the Draper family, Mad Men has quickly become one of my favorite shows on television. Season 4 doesn't start until June, so until then might I suggest a re-run trip down Madison Avenue, New York to find out what you are missing?

1st annual best dressed at the SAG awards

The title of best dressed goes to Glee star Lea Michele. I loved the color and cut of her Catherine Malandrino gown, and I thought her make-up and hair were flawless. She was gorgeous and youthful all at the same time, and the emerald green color really popped on the red carpet.
1st runner-up goes to SAG nominee Diane Kruger. I thought she looked very elegant in Jason Wu, and the mustard yellow color really works for her. She looked like a Grecian goddess!2nd runner-up is Kyra Sedgwick in a structured Vera Wang gown. I love the steel gray sash that cuts across the bodice, and the jewel embellishments gathered at her waist. Kyra is consistently one of my favorites at award shows.
Honorable mention goes to the always flawless Penelope Cruz. I loved the beading and length of her L'Wren Scott black cocktail dress.
The Miss Congeniality award goes to comedienne Anna Kendrick. I liked her Alberta Ferretti gown (especially the neckline), and I thought it reflected her personality and age perfectly.

Nati's Mexican Restaurant

Nati's Mexican Restaurant, located in Ocean Beach, California has been a family tradition for many years. My Grandpa Tenney started eating there in the 1960's during the good old days of .35 cent tacos! To this day, it remains one of our all-time favorite places to eat in the San Diego area.

This year, Nati's is turning 50, and most of their longevity can be attributed to the fact that their food and menu have stayed relatively the same. From tamales to tostadas, chile rellenos to chimichangas, Nati's has something for everyone...And their enchilada sauce? To die for! The restaurant itself is nothing special. It's a little dive nestled among the surf shops and tattoo parlors of Ocean Beach. On a sunny day, I like to sit in the vine-covered patio and sip a virgin margarita, while I listen to the sounds of the waves in the distance (the Ocean Beach Pier is about 50 feet away). The chips and salsa are very good, but it's the jalapeno soaked carrots that really get your nose running! Next I'll have the carne asada burrito (smothered of course) with fresh guacamole and a side of Spanish rice (reasonably priced around $9). My other favorite meal is the sour cream enchiladas, which are served with savory ground beef and thick slices of ripe California avocados. Top off the meal with some after-dinner mints and a stroll along the pier, and you are looking at one happy lady. If you ever happen to be in the San Diego area, please do yourself a favor and stop by Nati's Mexican Restaurant on Bacon Street in Ocean Beach. Oh, and say hello to Louisa for me...she has been a waitress there since my first visit in 1980. Happy eating!

It is my son's very first time (he is 3 - the same age I was on my first trip to Disneyland) and I can hardly wait to show him the ropes. The Young Victoria

It is hard to put into words just how much I liked the film The Young Victoria. After all, it's no secret to my readers that I love a good period drama, but I liked this one even more knowing that it was based on a true story...The movie begins with a brief look at Victoria's early years of education and isolation, to her later discovery that she has become the Queen of England, at the tender age of 18. From there, the story really takes off, as Victoria finds herself plunged into court life while seeking guidance and direction from someone she can trust. Many are willing to help the "child queen" including the manipulative Lord Melbourne (played by the fabulous Paul Bettany, Master and Commander), but it is ultimately her cousin Prince Albert (the dashing Rupert Friend, Pride & Prejudice) who she comes to rely on not only for his sound judgment in royal matters, but his devotion and love as well.
History can tell you the rest of the story, but the details are superbly captured in this film. From the lush costumes, the beautiful locations, and a sweeping score, The Young Victoria was one of the most entertaining movies I have seen in a long time. Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) displays the perfect blend of girlish joy and queenly dignity needed to make a film like this work, and the scenes between Blunt and Friend are rife with romance and chemistry. (I will not be surprised if Blunt receives an Oscar nomination for her role as Victoria). Any liberties the screenplay may have taken in "re-arranging" history are sure to be overlooked by the sheer joy of watching this wonderful film. Happy viewing!

Sophie Soprano

One of my favorite artists is a local gal named Sophie Soprano. She is the alter ego of fine artist Lynn Farrar (who also happens to be my aunt)! While Lynn paints more conservative seascapes, landscapes, quaking aspen, animals, and farm life, Sophie ventures into whimsical scenes of flying foxes, bicycling sheep, hot air balloon rides and talking chickens. And while I love both styles, her work as Sophie Soprano is my absolute favorite.

This first painting is called "Christmas Morning" and was featured in her children's book Laughing All the Way. I love that she always uses lots of bright colors and smiling faces.This second painting is called "Family Fantasia Farm" and was displayed at the Two Sister's Fine Art Gallery in Midway, Utah. I love her attention to detail, and that most of her paintings feature ordinary animals or people doing extraordinary things. Barbie Fashion Calendar

One of my favorite things about the new year is picking out calendars for my home. There is something very satisfying about taking down an old, well-used calendar and tossing it into the trash. This Christmas I got some great calendars (including a beautiful autographed Greg Olsen calendar from my girlfriend), but my favorite is a 2010 Barbie Fashion Model Calendar (printed on recycled paper no less). Très bien!I'm sure when you think of fashion, Barbie isn't the first girl that comes to mind. However, if you sit and ponder over this a while, it's definitely true. Barbie has had more outfits and seen more decades than Princess Diana. She has learned to adapt and change throughout the years, from model, to homemaker, to career woman, and back again. You could say that Barbie has re-invented herself more times than Madonna!

So, what better way to inspire and create in 2010 than to have Barbie watching over my comfortable blog nook. Oh, and by the way...the pink and black No. 6 is my favorite ("Blush Becomes Her Barbie 2001"). What is yours?

My husband and I went to see Invictus last night, and we both loved the film. I won't tell you much about it except that everyone should take some time out of their busy holiday schedule to go and see this amazing and wonderful movie!

Natalie Cole Christmas concert

For me, it just wouldn't be the Christmas season without seeing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform in Salt Lake City...
This year the choir was joined by Grammy Award winning artist Natalie Cole and Pulitzer Prize winning author David McCullough for their annual Christmas concert. Miss Cole wowed the crowd with her lovely vocals on such songs as: My Grown Up Christmas List, Angels From the Realms of Glory, and The Christmas Song (made famous by her father Nat King Cole). However, my personal favorite song of the evening was her simple yet hauntingly beautiful rendition of The Holly and the Ivy. It was absolutely wonderful!

The choir and orchestra also performed other classic holiday songs like O Holy Night, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, and I'll Be Home For Christmas (while David McCullough told the story of a World War II White House Christmas). Also, the organ solo, Good King Wenceslas, was particularly show-stopping. If you couldn't make it to the concert, the DVD will be out next year, or you can catch it on Music and the Spoken Word which airs Sunday mornings on KBYU or the Hallmark Channel. Merry Christmas!

Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life
This tender film always brings a tear to my eye. I love the performances by Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart, and it's something I can't wait to share with my children. A true holiday classic.
Little People Christmas Nativity
This was a gift to me from my in-laws when I had my baby. The stable plays Away in a Manger, and my little boy loves that there is a Christmas decoration he can actually play with. If you have children, I highly recommend this darling nativity!

Disney pin trading

It's no secret that I love all things Disney!

One of my favorite things about going to Disneyland is doing pin trading. I don't know if it's the thrill of the hunt, the experience of meeting new people, or the insatiable collector in me, but I am officially addicted to pin trading! In my opinion there is no better way to experience the Disney parks than to walk around in my blinged-out lanyard trading and collecting Disney pins. For those of you who have never heard of (or participated in) pin trading, here are a few tips and tricks to help you get started...What is pin trading? Disneyland theme parks sell unique and fun pins in most of their stores to collect and trade.

What do pins look like? The pins feature Disney films, characters, park rides, and other various Disney attractions. Each pin comes with a rubber back in the shape of mouse ears. (See picture above).

How much do pins cost? Most pins range from $6 to $50 depending on what you are buying. There are individual, sets, limited edition, and special collectors pins too. Most of them however, are simply used for buying and trading.

How do you trade? While at the park you might notice "cast members" (aka employees) wearing lanyards or satchels of pins. You can approach these cast members and ask to see their pins. If they are wearing a pin that you would like, you may trade one of your pins for one of theirs. Disney cast members have to trade with you, as long as they don't already have the pin you are trading!

How many pins can I trade? As many as you like. However, you are only allowed to trade up to two pins per cast member per day.

Where can I find pins to trade? Besides shopping in Disney park stores, the best place to purchase pins is on eBay. You can buy pins individually, or purchase them in a "Lot" or group. These "Lots" are generally cheaper if you buy them in bulk outside of Disney parks. Most of the "Lot" pins are in grab bags, so you don't always know what you are getting. However, it doesn't matter what pins they send you, as long as they are official Disney pins and can be legitimately traded at Disney theme parks.

I like to buy a bag of mismatched pins to take to the park and trade with cast members for better ones!

Why would I want to do pin trading? Besides the obvious collecting benefits, pin trading is a great way to experience Disneyland or Disney World. I have met a lot of really interesting people, and I have a lot of great memories doing pin trading. As you move through the parks you will begin to notice that there are many people who enjoy pin trading too! It's a great way to enhance your Disney vacation, as well as a wonderful conversation opener!

The Vampire Diaries

I love this time of year. The cool weather, the beautiful fall colors, and of course all the spooky delights of the Halloween season. For those of you who love all things vampire, might I suggest my latest and greatest guilty pleasure: The Vampire Diaries. The newest TV series is basically a teen soap opera starring two gorgeous blood sucking brothers Stefan and Damon, who both want one thing: the beautiful Elena. There are lots of interesting plot twists, secrets, scandals, and of course plenty of neck biting. One can't help but compare this show to Twilight (which it even references occasionally), but there are some interesting differences. For example, the vampires wear rings which help them to walk around during the daylight, as well as have mind control over their victims. Throw in a gorgeous supporting cast, dark sets, and some serious teen angst, and you have The Vampire Diaries. The show airs Thursdays at 7:00 PM MST on the CW. Happy viewing!

Our vote for best dressed goes to Project Runway star Heidi Klum, who proves that you can still look amazing at any size...even pregnant! She simply glows in this gorgeous black gown by Marchesa.1st runner-up goes to Holly Hunter, who totally rocked this George Hobeika silver dress. Ms. Hunter is a little too skinny for my taste, but she still looks amazing. The woman is 51 people!2nd runner-up goes to the lovely Dana Delaney. She wore the best color on the red carpet, when she stepped out in this purple Basil Soda number.3rd runner-up goes to Grey's Anatomy star Sandra Oh, who wore gold Marchesa. This dress is simple yet elegant, and fits her body perfectly.The Miss Congeniality award goes to the fabulous Toni Collette who is wearing Monique Lhuillier. The dress is beautifully made, and the hot pink color gives it a fun and flirty edge.
Most improved goes to actress Jenna Fisher. This is the first red carpet event that I have been wowed by The Office star. (The dress is by designer Reem Acra). Eat your heart out Pam!

This month I decided to branch out and try something different, so my friends and I signed up for a belly dancing class. It's a great core workout, but more than that it feels like a small glimpse into another culture. If any Middle Eastern dance classes are being held in your community, I highly recommend taking one. I have had so much fun!

P.S. I love this photo of a young Jane Seymour from the Harryhausen cult flick Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. Maybe I can look like her when my class is done? Happy dancing!

beautiful & modest

Contrary to popular belief amongst the Hollywood crowd, it is possible to be beautiful and modest at the same time. Take the lovely Scarlett Johansson, for example. She looks absolutely stunning in Dolce & Gabanna (on the left), and simple, yet elegant in Prada (right). And while I'm not too sure about the bright red lipstick paired with a peach skirt, I do know that her look is soft, feminine, and very old-hollywood glamorious (think Ingrid Bergman a la Casablanca). But enough about my opinion.

(500) Days of Summer

Forget everything you think you know about romantic comedies. Not only will (500) Days of Summer completely surprise and delight you, it will change your expectations of the genre forever.The movie follows two unique souls: Summer (Zooey Deschanel, Almost Famous) and Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 10 Things I Hate About You) through 500 days of their sweet (and sometimes sour) relationship. The film jumps between days, so you are constantly flashing backwards and forwards to get a unique deconstruction of their relationship. Summer is a free spirited girl who doesn't want to be tied down or worry about labeling feelings, while Tom is a hopeless romantic who dreams of spending his life with Summer (occasionally overlooking her commitment flaws).

The film works because of an imaginative script from screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (don't be surprised if these two become Oscar contenders for Best Original Screenplay in 2010). (500) Days of Summer is fresh, funny, and sentimental, but it's also real, which is what makes the movie work. It also works because of strong performances by Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt, who have a real chemistry (which is often so commercial and formulaic to your typical romantic comedies).

The supporting cast is wonderful, the soundtrack is a great compliment to the film (look for a terrific song/dance scene to Hall & Oates) and the costumes are perfect expressions of the characters who are wearing them. (Trust me ladies, you are going to love Summer's wardrobe, which is full of unique vintage pieces)!

Just a few things I have been loving lately:

I found this a few weeks ago at Gardner Village while shopping with a girlfriend. It smells like a little slice of summer, and I love how soft it makes my hands. Just watching the trailer for the new film Where the Wild Things Are makes me feel like a little kid again. The special effects look awesome, and I am interested to see how they will transform a short (yet beloved) children's book into a feature length film. Lullaby is a collection of music for children by popular folk songbird Jewel, that will please both babies and grown-ups alike. With classics like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Simple Gifts, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow, as well as re-makes of original Jewel songs like Angel Standing By, and an assortment of new songs (Raven is a personal favorite), Lullaby is sure to sweetly send you to sleep.

I first heard of the book Boxes for Katje on the television program Reading Rainbow. After seeing the show, I went to my local library to read it again. Boxes for Katje is a wonderful story set during post World War II, that will teach your children about sharing, hope, and the power of friendship.

sweet corn tomalito

I first tried tomalito at Chevy's Fresh Mex restaurant. It's a sweet and delicious corn mash, generally served as a side dish. So when I made turkey tacos the other night, I decided to add tomalito to the menu (to the delight of everyone). You may need to pick up a few extra ingredients at the store to make this dish, but it's actually quite easy to cook.

You will need:

5 tablespoons soft butter
1/4 cup masa harina
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 cups frozen or fresh corn
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons milk

Tie on your apron. In a medium bowl mix butter, masa harina, and sugar until light and fluffy. In a food processor or blender combine 1 cup of corn, water and cornmeal until smooth. Stir into the masa harina mixture. Add 1 cup of corn, baking powder, salt and milk and mix together. In a flat, microwave safe dish, spread tomalito mixture and cook at 30% power for approximately 7 minutes. Cook in microwave on high for 4 more minutes. Let tomalito stand for a few minutes before eating. Serves 4-6. Happy eating!

*Masa harina is a Mexican flour generally used for making tortillas. You can find it in the baking section of any grocery store.

This week I've been reading Men and Angels by James C. Christensen, and my favorite painting just happens to be the title of the book. The first time I saw Men and Angels it definitely struck a chord with me. (It looked to me like I had wandered into a dark room and interrupted these two characters who were in deep conversation. Or perhaps she is simply watching over him). I love that Christensen blends fantasy elements with religion, women and exotic colors. His art is very elegant, yet is available and understandable to everyone. If you get the chance, I highly recommend the book and the artist. Forget predictable blockbusters like Transformers or The Proposal, the movie I have been waiting to see this year is the indie romance (500) Days of Summer.

Starring the quirky and cute songbird Zooey Deschanel (Almost Famous) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (10 Things I Hate About You), this fresh film promises an original screenplay, and boasts a killer soundtrack (The Smiths, Hall & Oates, Regina Spektor, Feist, and Simon & Garfunkel to name a few). My Sister's Keeper

It's rare these days to find a movie that is not only better, but completely surpasses it's literary counterpart in both quality and story. Such is the case with the best-selling book and newly released film, My Sister's Keeper, starring Cameron Diaz.Diaz plays Sara Fitzgerald. A housewife and mother of two, who is struggling to keep it all together after she learns that her young daughter Kate (a brilliant performance by newcomer Sofia Vasillieva, Medium) has a rare and deadly form of cancer. In their desperation to find a cure, the Fitzgerald family decides to conceive a third child, who will be a genetic match and donor for their dying girl. Little do the Fitzgerald's realize the Pandora's box of problems they are about to unleash on their family in doing so.

As the film opens, genetic match and younger sister Anna (a very tender Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine) is seeking legal emancipation from her parents for the rights to her own body. A body that she has used to help her sister in various treatments throughout the years. Aware that this decision will surely cause her sister's death, Anna presses forward, determined to have a voice in a situation where she is rarely consulted and often neglected. Anna's actions set off a chain of events that causes the family to take a step back and re-evaluate what is most important to them.

I thought the movie was extremely well-done, with an excellent soundtrack, heart wrenching narration and pitch-perfect casting. All of the characters are very three-dimensional, and your feelings are constantly being changed as you look at the situation through each of the different perspectives. Where the book was heavy, over-the-top, dramatic, depressing, and completely bogged down by legal issues, the movie has a very believable quality which is grounded in the strong performances by the entire cast (this is Cameron Diaz's best work to date, and I especially liked the cameo from Thomas Dekker [Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles] as Kate's boyfriend Taylor). I also liked that the movie focused more on the dynamics of the Fitzgerald family: their love, disagreements, and courage in coping with terminal illness. The ending to the movie, My Sister's Keeper, was far superior to the ending of the book, and this was one of the few times where I was very pleased with the director's lisence in changing the story.

Do yourself a favor and skip the book My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. However, I strongly encourage you to grab your sister or best girlfriend and go see the film My Sister's Keeper. One of the best chick flicks I have seen in a very long time. Oh, and don't forget to bring a box of Kleenex! Happy viewing!

Anne Hathaway continues to dazzle on the red carpet...
Is it just me, or does Anne Hathaway look more glamorous, poised, and lovely with each award show she attends? I don't usually follow the Tony Awards, but when I picked up a copy of EW last week and saw her in this black Oscar de la Renta number I nearly fell out of my chair! Who would have thought that the young girl from Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted would turn out to be Audrey Hepburn re-incarnated? I think she looks simply stunning, but that's just one girl's opinion.

Anna's Lettuce Wraps

Book club was awesomely delicious last week thanks to Anna's lettuce wraps. I know a lot of you have been begging for the recipe, so here it is! You will need:

3 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup water chestnuts
2 boneless chicken breasts
2/3 cup diced mushrooms
3 tablespoons chopped onion
1 teaspoon crushed garlic
1 head iceberg lettuce

Stir Fry Sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon rice vinegar

Lettuce Wrap Sauce
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon sesame oil

Tie on your apron. Make Lettuce Wrap Sauce and set in fridge to chill. Make Stir Fry Sauce and set aside. In a large skillet or wok heat olive oil on high. Saute chicken for 4-5 minutes on each side. Remove chicken and mince after it has cooled. Add all chopped vegetables and garlic to hot skillet and stir fry for a few minutes. Then add chicken and stir fry sauce. Saute for two more minutes, then serve on lettuce leaves with Lettuce Wrap Sauce. Happy eating!

Blue Bayou Restaurant

Anyone who has ever been to Disneyland in southern California, and ridden Pirates of the Caribbean, has at least seen the Blue Bayou Restaurant, if not eaten there.

Situated within the ride itself, the Blue Bayou is all atmosphere. The restaurant is designed to look like a large outdoor patio, nestled on the banks of a Louisiana swamp. Japanese lanterns hang above diners, as the boats for Pirates of the Caribbean float silently past. Firefly's twinkle over the water and Spanish moss hangs from the nearby trees. Just sitting in the restaurant is an experience in and of itself!Because it was our first time dining at the Blue Bayou, we made sure to request a table right on the water (which only added about 5 minutes to our wait time) and was definitely worth the extra effort! It was an awesome, unobstructed view of the swamp and it's floating passengers.

The menu is only about a page long, and featured a small variety of seafood, steaks and southern dishes. Most of the food was priced between $25-$35, so be prepared to spend a little money at the Blue Bayou. My mom ordered the salmon, and my sisters the short ribs and crab cakes, respectively. (I also ordered the crab cakes).

Each entree comes with soup or salad and crusty rolls. We all ordered the salad, which was delicious, and the rolls were unlimited (you just had to ask for more). I tried a bite of everyone's food and it was all wonderful. My crab cakes were particularly awesome - probably the best I have ever had, and served with a spicy tomato sauce.
Another item on the menu that is a must-try is the Mint Julep (lemonade with a combination of mint and cherry flavoring) which was very refreshing, especially after a long day in the park. We also ordered the creme brulee for dessert, which was served with an edible treasure chest.

Between the entrees, drinks, dessert and tip, we spent around $40 + per person, and although I saw children in the restaurant, this is not a place I would take my kids. The Blue Bayou is a romantic, delicious, and absolutely must-do experience (at least once) for anyone planning a trip to Disneyland. Happy eating!

Oliver Twist

I hope all of you had the chance to see Oliver Twist on Masterpiece a few weeks ago. Did you love it as much as I did? I have seen many theatrical and stage productions of this beloved Dickens classic, but I have to say this was probably the best.For one thing it featured two of my favorite actors: the talented Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda, The Secret Life of Bees) as Nancy, and the hilarious Timothy Spall (Harry Potter, Enchanted) as Fagin; both brilliant in their respective roles. I was also very pleased with newcomer Morven Christie (Lost in Austen) as the lovely and kind Rose.
For those who don't know, Oliver Twist is the rags to riches story of an orphan who, despite his tragic circumstances, remains a sweet and loving child. Out on the streets, Oliver gets caught up with a gang of London pickpockets, until he finds a home with a genteel and sympathetic family. Beautifully filmed, and set to a fresh and funky score, this story finds new life on Masterpiece. Happy viewing!

On his most recent trip to Sweden, my dad surprised me with a book and calendar featuring artwork by renowned Swedish painter Carl Larsson. Of course I fell in love instantly!

Larsson, who painted during the turn of the century, is best known for his vibrant watercolor prints of Swedish life. His primary subjects were his wife and children; their farm and surrounding countryside. I love his bright vivid colors, and that most of his paintings feature children. Chicken Piquante

This is another of my mom's famous recipes. Not only is Chicken Piquante really simple and flavorful, it is also very healthy too. I love to serve it with a side of Spanish rice and a wedge of fresh lime. Happy eating!

You will need:

3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 cup medium or hot salsa
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (more if desired)
2 tablespoons butter
plain yogurt
fresh cilantro

Tie on your apron. In a medium bowl, combine salsa, mustard and lime juice. Marinate chicken breasts in mixture for 30 minutes. In a large skillet melt butter and add chicken and all of the marinade. Cook chicken on medium-high heat (both sides) for about 20 minutes. Serve chicken with marinade, a dollop of plain yogurt, and chopped fresh cilantro (I promise the yogurt is delicious with the chicken). Salt and pepper to taste. Serves 2-3.

My Favorite Things: Illustrated Fairy Tales

One of my favorite things to collect are beautifully illustrated fairy tales. I have tried to gather a lot of varieties over the years (especially some of the volumes that I had as a child). To me a children's book is just not complete without beautiful pictures to accompany the story. Here is a list of some of my all-time favorites:

Hilary Knight's Cinderella. This book was a favorite of my sisters and I. The re-telling itself is sweet, but the pictures are absolutely incredible. Each page has lots of tiny details, and I love the whimsical feel of Knight's artwork. If you look carefully, you can also find the fairy godmother hidden throughout most of the story.

Rumpelstiltskin by Paul O. Zelinsky. Zelinsky's re-telling is pretty straightforward, but the paintings are really what bring the story to life. Each scene and character looks like they walked off the fabric of an ancient medieval woven tapestry. My favorite picture is Rumpelstiltskin himself riding around a bonfire on a giant cooking spoon.

The Sleeping Beauty by Mercer Mayer. This book has it all: a fantastic retelling, and some of the most beautiful and ethereal artwork you will ever see! Mercer Mayer made a name for himself with his famous children's books about Little Critter, however, he really comes into his own with The Sleeping Beauty. This is hands-down the best version of the story I have ever read, and I could look for hours at his gorgeous watercolor images. Unfortunately this wonderful book is out-of-print, or I would buy a copy for all my friends!

Classic Fairy Tales by Scott Gustafson. If you're looking for a large compilation of fairy tales with lots of great pictures, then this is the book for you. Gustafson's re-tellings are adequate, but his paintings are breathtaking. His art for Snow White and Puss in Boots are two of my favorites, and fortunately his books are available at most of the popular retailers. I hope you enjoy these books as much as I have. Catherine Hardwicke is nothing, if not passionate about her movie Twilight. This behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world she helped to visually create was fascinating and informative. Hardwicke graciously shares with us her journey through the creative process, and all the complicated details that go into making a film.Filled with lots of gorgeous photos (Edward!), clever notes, storyboard sketches, and enough movie magic information and trivia to please even the most rabid Stephenie Meyer fan. This is one of the best companions to the Twilight series I have ever read!
